Pagan homered, tripled and drove in three runs on a perfect night at the plate against his former team, leading Yusmeiro Petit and the Giants past the New York Mets 8-5 on Tuesday. "I wanted to come back so the team finished strong and we can feel good about ourselves," Pagan said. Maryland is off to a tremendous start, the team winning 12 of its first 13 games, including the last five in a row. The Terrapins lone setback of the campaign came in a 76-65 final at home to now third-ranked Virginia. UM recently beat another team from the state of Michigan as it topped visiting Oakland this past Saturday, 72-56. This is only the second true road game of the season for the Terps, who won at Oklahoma State on Dec. 21, 73-64. Michigan State is 9-4 heading into its Big Ten Conference opener, with its losses coming against Duke (81-71), Kansas (61-56), Notre Dame (79-78 OT) and shockingly, Texas Southern (71-64 OT). Coach Tom Izzos club bounced back from the embarrassing home loss to the then one-win Tigers by hammering The Citadel on Dec. 22, 82-56, to run its record in East Lansing this season to 6-1. Michigan State has posted a 45-19 mark in Big Ten home openers, and Izzo is 17-2 in such events, including wins in each of the last 12. They goaded the opposition into 15 turnovers and allowed them to come up with only 19 total rebounds. A massive 44-16 advantage in points in the paint helped matters, as did a 30-3 edge in fast break points and a 28-11 advantage in bench points. Denzel Valentine paced MSU with 18 points, and he grabbed six rebounds and handed out six assists for good measure. Three others scored in double figures as well, and Travis Trice was credited with 11 of the teams 23 helpers. Valentine leads the Spartans in scoring at 14.5 ppg, and he is ranked 10th nationally in 3-point FG pct. (.500, 35-of-70). Trice (12.9 ppg, 5.9 apg), Branden Dawson (10.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg) and Bryn Forbes (10.2 ppg) round out the double-digit scorers for Michigan State, which puts up 75 ppg in hitting 49.3 percent of its total shots, which includes a 42 percent effort from 3-point land.
