The studio is redoubling its efforts to produce a game more like real football. Developers are aware of the criticism that for 25 years, Madden has often felt like a football brand rather than a precise simulation of the sport.
"It doesn't play like football; it doesn't play like Madden," Rex Dickson, Madden's creative director of games, told me in an interview last December. We want to change that. " Dickson joined Tiburon in early 2012 and worked with cam Weber, head of EA Sports Football, to develop a different course of action.
Dixon continued: "as cam and I worked together on this vision, we moved the game in a 'more real, more real direction.". We realize that if we don't teach people how football works, they will never understand the game. "That's the real reason for developing the skills trainer model, because I basically think that if we want to continue to move in the real, real direction, we need a tutorial system."
Dickson told me that Tiburon got a lot of positive feedback in Madden 25's skills trainer mode. The studio can track the time Madden players spend in the game. This data, known as telemetry, not only shows that players use skills trainer at an impressive speed, but also that players who stick to this model end up spending more time on the game as a whole.
The data also shows the plight of Madden players, which allows Tiburon to build new tutorials and adjust existing ones around these problem areas. The skills trainers in Madden 15 offer 48 different tutorials, exercises and challenges. Many of them teach control and game play both in attack and defense, such as how to get users to catch the orb or run triple options. This year, the model will also provide an entire section on football concepts and strategies.
