JERSEY CITY, N. Alisson Jersey .J. -- Richard Sherman, Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch deservedly draw the attention for what theyve done in getting the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl. Players like Jermaine Kearse, Walter Thurmond and Malcolm Smith are just as big a reason why Seattle is facing Denver in Sundays championship game. Seattle may have one of the better starting lineups in the NFL, but the depth that general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll have amassed is equally impressive. Its the reason they can rotate eight different defensive linemen. Its why when Brandon Browner was injured and Thurmond suspended, Byron Maxwell could step in and the play in Seattles secondary not suffer. Its a regular refrain in the Seattle locker room to hear teammates say the Seahawks reserves could be starters on other teams. And there is some proof: in the past year 23 players once with Seattle have spent time on the 53-man roster of other teams. "Its crazy because were always saying our backups could be starters. We always say that," strong safety Kam Chancellor said. "Those guys, people dont see this, but in practice those guys play just as good as us. Theyre making plays, getting the ball. Those guys contribute on special teams. Our special teams are probably one of the best. "Those guys put in work on special teams and it just goes unseen." When Carroll and Schneider took over, there was a revolving door of roster moves --839 in total since before the start of the 2010 season -- that followed in an effort to make a roster that was competitive beyond just the starters on each side of the ball. They wanted a depth chart that was the envy of the NFL. They wanted their reserves coveted by other teams. They wanted guys they were going to be released grabbed off the waiver wire the second they were made available. Seattle got its wish. Of the players released in the past year, five ended up in Jacksonville and four landed in Kansas City. "John and I have joined together aggressively to compete at every single turn, at every opportunity whatever it may be, to see if theres something in there for us," Carroll said. "Hes done a great job of having the competitive will to keep pushing and fighting and clawing and scratching to have the opportunity that has sent us down the road early on with the hundreds of guys that came through the program." Kearse, Thurmond and Smith are just three examples of players not counted on as full-time starters that have proven invaluable. Seattles seen contributions from Michael Bowie, Clinton McDonald, Jeremy Lane and Heath Farwell just to name a few more. Kearse was an undrafted free agent that signed with Seattle in 2012 and became a needed option as a third and fourth receiver this season with Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice suffering through injuries. Kearse finished with 22 receptions and four touchdowns in the regular season, but his biggest catch came in the NFC championship game when his 35-yard TD grab in the fourth quarter gave Seattle a 20-17 lead. Thurmond missed four games late in the season when he was suspended for violating the leagues substance-abuse policy. But hes started three games at cornerback this season and is Seattles best option as the fifth defensive back covering slot receivers -- a big emphasis this week with the amount of times the Broncos throw. Smith has shown the same kind of versatility at linebacker. Hes played both outside spot this season, first when Bruce Irvin was suspended and later when injuries to K.J. Wright and Bobby Wagner forced shuffling. "Through all the stuff we have gone through there has always been a guy who stepped up and made plays," Wagner said. "Last year it was Walter, this year it was Walter and Maxwell and guys like Malcolm, everybody. We have a bunch of players that if someone went down can step in and do a great job." One of the ways Seattle was able to create such a dynamic roster came from the three-way quarterback competition that Carroll had last season and which Wilson eventually won. It sent the message to the entire roster and to any free agents -- big-name or small-time -- that Seattle was a place they could come and have a chance. "You could tell looking at our board of players that we had fast, confident, intelligent individuals," Schneider said last week. "Guys who knew they were going to come in and compete for positions because the previous year we had a three person quarterback competition. "You know you have a shot when you have a three person quarterback competition as a player." Gregoire Defrel Jersey . Inter Milan ended its five-match winless streak in all competitions by beating 10-man Bologna 3-1 on new manager Claudio Ranieris debut, while injury-plagued AC Milan edged Cesena 1-0 with an early goal from Clarence Seedorf.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Geno Smith appears not ready for prime time, and Mark Sanchez might not be ready for the opener. Now what for the New York Jets? Well, they have less than two weeks to solve their big quarterback question before they face Tampa Bay on Sept. 8 in the regular-season opener. "We said from Day 1 that there was no timetable on us announcing a starting quarterback," coach Rex Ryan said Monday. And, theres no rush, of course -- except when you consider that the preseason is nearly over and the Jets still have no clarity on the situation. Smith was given an opportunity to possibly seize the starting job last Saturday against the Giants, but came up with a dismal performance that included three interceptions and taking a safety when he stepped out of the back of the end zone. Sanchez, who appeared in great shape to win the competition, is now recovering from a shoulder injury suffered in garbage time against the Giants -- and could keep him out for the start of the season. It is conceivable, of course, that the Jets could keep everyone -- the media, fans and opponents -- guessing until the Friday before their game against the Buccaneers. "Well probably have our decision before that," Ryan said. "But as we said, were not going to rush the decision until were completely comfortable with that decision. And, well stay with that. "Hey, I dont know what else to say about it." Ryan is probably a bit surprised hes even still talking about the competition at this point. After all, it was deemed an "open competition" that would be decided when one of the quarterbacks had elevated himself above the other. But, it has been so tightly contested that there was no clear opening, an opportunity for most observers to say, "Thats the guy." Until Saturday night. Thats when Smith showed his inexperience in his first NFL start with some jitters, mistakes and missteps through three-plus quarters. "It (was) pretty uneven," Smith said. "I had some ups and downs. Its all a part of the learning curve." Its a curve that could continue through Thursdays game against Philadelphia and into Week 1 against Tampa Bay. Ryan said the Jets havent yet determined whos playing against the Eagles, but Sanchez will certainly not. Many fans and media assumed Sanchez, with a solid camp and preseason performance, had clinched the starting job after Smiths performance. But then, Ryan wanted to see more of Sanchez, who went into the game and had his right shoulder crunched by Marvin Austin after completing a pass with less than 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Sanchez is day to day with the injury, which neither he nor Ryan would detaiil. Diego Perotti Jersey . . Sanchez is staying positive, though, about potentially being ready for the season opener. "Thats the goal," Sanchez said. "Every injury is different. Its all subjective at this point, and Im going to do everything I possibly can. Thats all I can promise." Sanchez refused to speculate about possibly losing the starting job, which he has held since coming into the league in 2009, because of the injury. He also wouldnt go into what type of rehabilitation process he faces. "Emotionally, youre just upset, and thats really where your heads at," he said. "Youre just upset to be hurt. You never want to be hurt. You work too hard to get hurt and its just a bummer. So, you just rebound, rehab your butt off and get back as soon as possible." And, if hes not ready to go against Tampa Bay, the starter could be Smith -- by default. One things for sure: It wont be either Greg McElroy or Matt Simms, who has had an impressive camp while competing for the No. 3 job. Smith has shown some promise this preseason, and come a long way with improving his footwork and picking up Marty Mornhinwegs offence. The Jets claimed they needed much more film on Smith to better evaluate him after he sat out a game with a sprained ankle, and they certainly got it against the Giants. "With Geno, there was the good, the bad and the ugly," Ryan said. The good was the two scoring drives he led in the 24-21 overtime win, including a 22-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. The bad was the interceptions, although Ryan credited Justin Tuck for making a "great play" on one of them. As for the ugly, that was the safety when Smith lost track of his surroundings on the field. Despite all of that, Smith insisted that if the decision came that he would be the Week 1 starter, hed be ready to lead the Jets. "Yes, I am," he said. "Ive been working hard, extremely hard this off-season. Im preparing myself to be a starter Week 1 and if Im given the chance, Ill be prepared for it." Sanchez, meanwhile, wouldnt say whether he thought he had won the starting job before his injury. "I feel like Ive put together a great camp and its been my best camp," he said. "That decision is going to be up to the coaches. So, well see." ---- NOTES: WR Santonio Holmes, taken off the physically unable to perform list last Friday, participated in positional drills as he works his way back from a foot injury suffered in Week 4 last season. ...
